Resident Evil combines outbreak stories, recurring characters and several remakes. A remake retells an older game’s place in the story, so its modern release year does not move the events forward. This guide covers the main saga and the two Revelations side stories.

The 2019, 2020 and 2023 remakes are separate releases that retell their originals. Pick the original or remake for each chapter; there is no need to play both to understand the main plot. Code: Veronica remains a released 2000 game. Its announced remake is not included as a released game.

Peppermoon’s recommendation
For a modern first play, use the remakes of Resident Evil, 2, 3 and 4, then continue with 5, 6, 7, Village and Requiem. Add Code: Veronica and Revelations when you want the wider character story. If you prefer seeing how the series developed, use release order.
