Assassin’s Creed jumps across centuries, but its present-day story moves forward through the games’ release order. Those are two different timelines. This guide lists the major story-led console and PC games, their release years, and where a remake retells an earlier chapter.

Release order
Release order
This is the main historical storyline. It leaves out mobile releases and smaller side stories such as Chronicles, Liberation and Freedom Cry. Those can be added to a later expanded edition.

- Assassin’s Creed II
- Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood
- Assassin’s Creed: Revelations
- Assassin’s Creed III
- Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag
- Assassin’s Creed Rogue
- Assassin’s Creed Unity
- Assassin’s Creed Syndicate
- Assassin’s Creed Origins
- Assassin’s Creed Odyssey
- Assassin’s Creed Valhalla
- Assassin’s Creed Mirage
- Assassin’s Creed Shadows
- Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced
Game remake of Black Flag
Story order by historical setting
Choose either Black Flag release. Resynced retells and expands the 2013 game; it is not another historical chapter to play after it. In Assassin’s Creed III, the early sequences overlap the end of Rogue, so this is a practical sequence rather than a perfect scene-by-scene splice.

Which order should a new player choose?
Release order is best for following the modern-day plot and seeing the series evolve. Historical order is useful if you mainly want to tour the eras. For a shorter entry point, begin with Assassin’s Creed II or Origins; each introduces a substantial historical adventure without requiring every previous game.
